Diabetes and periodontitis - an interaction with consequences
29.01.2025
Around 10% of the population in Germany is affected by diabetes.
In addition to the known secondary diseases such as damage to the eyes, kidneys or nerves, periodontitis is also a common side effect of diabetes.
How are diabetes and periodontitis linked?
People with diabetes have a three times higher risk of developing periodontitis. The two diseases influence each other: periodontitis can worsen blood sugar levels, while uncontrolled diabetes favors the progression of periodontitis. The reason for this lies in the bacteria that occur in periodontitis. Unlike caries bacteria, which only cause damage in the mouth, these bacteria enter the entire body and trigger inflammatory reactions. This increases the insulin resistance of the cells, which makes it more difficult to regulate blood sugar.
What can you do to protect your health?
Good oral hygiene and regular visits to the dentist play a crucial role in preventing periodontitis and keeping diabetes under control. Here are some tips:
- Regular check-ups: Have your gums checked regularly.
- Professional teeth cleaning: Close-knit appointments help remove tartar and bacterial plaque.
- Screening for bacteria: An analysis can show which bacteria may be increasing your risk.
- Thorough dental care: Brush your teeth thoroughly at least twice a day.
- Care of interdental spaces: Use dental floss or interdental brushes daily.
- Quit smoking: Abstaining from smoking improves blood circulation and supports healing.
- Healthy diet: A balanced diet helps to reduce inflammation in the body.
